De BIR heeft de aanplant van 3500 eiken in het Brusselse Sonien bos gesponsord. De aanplant staat symbool voor de enorme bijdrage die de recylingindustrie levert voor het beperken van de CO2 uitstoot.
Door recycling van materialen wordt jaarlijks 551 miljoen ton aan uitstoot van fossiele brandstoffen bespaart, dat komt neer op 1,8% van de totale emissie op onze aarde.
Bij de officiele gelegenheid werd ook een gedenkplaat onthult met daarop de tekst:
`Oak trees for the generations to come. On the occassion of its 60th anniversary, the Bureau of International Recycling co-financed the planting of 3500 oak trees in this part of the Soenien forest. In this way, it contrinutes to the protection of our natural heritage and the creation of a carbon pit`
